About this level test
A quick starting point for German exam study.
This 12-question check helps you choose where to begin. It samples German knowledge across difficulty bands, then gives you an indicative CEFR range and a next focus to investigate with real practice.
How it works
1
Answer progressively harder questions
You answer two closed-form questions at each level from A1 through C2, covering grammar, vocabulary, and meaning in context.
2
Score one point per correct answer
The result maps your total score to an indicative band: 0–2 A1, 3–4 A2, 5–6 B1, 7–8 B2, 9–10 C1, and 11–12 C2.
3
Turn the pattern into a next step
The breakdown shows sampled strengths and a focus area so you can choose practice before making a larger exam decision.
Levels and exam coverage
This is a provider-neutral German check. It gives language context, not a provider-specific placement or exam format result.
Levels
The questions sample all six CEFR bands from A1 through C2.
Skills sampled
Grammar patterns, vocabulary precision, and meaning in context.
Provider fit
The questions do not change for Goethe, telc, TestDaF, or ÖSD. Use the study planner and readiness check for provider context.
What your result can tell you
It measures
How many of these 12 closed-form items you answered correctly, plus the sampled language areas that stood out or need attention.
It does not measure
Speaking, listening, extended writing, full reading performance, an official CEFR level, or your probability of passing an exam.
Level test FAQs
Is this an official CEFR test?
No. It is a short Lingogrind diagnostic. The CEFR range is indicative and should be checked with broader, exam-relevant practice.
Does it test all four exam skills?
No. It only samples closed-form language knowledge. It does not score speaking, listening audio, extended writing, or complete reading tasks.
What should I do with my indicative band?
Use it as a starting point. Build a calendar with the study planner, then use the readiness check when you know your target exam and level.
